Post Passover and Beyond: Cleanse Recipes

Cleanse Recipes are not only good for you, but they are delicious and filling.

Detox at its most exciting and its most delicious. I whip out my cleanse recipes quite often, often for no reason at all, just because I love a good break in my eating habits, all year round, but especially after a splurge period like this past Passover. Don’t get me wrong: All the food we had at our Passover Program was fresh and plentiful (We were in Cape Cod: I will be reviewing it soon), but there is no denying most us go into food overload, and who could blame us? The See Food Diet is quite literally in your face during these heavy food traffic weeks, so trying to resist at all times is beyond human capacity. I’ll bet most of us would welcome some fantastic vegetarian cleanse recipes, and if they are real treats as these are, all the better!

So sorry I am such a poor techie, and my pictures don’t look as wonderful as I would like them to be. And I just know if I fiddled with them until they look perfect, they might never make it to the post, so please bear with me, there’s a great reward in store for you, keep scrolling down!

Incidentally, my cleanse recipes are quite close to the way I cook regularly.

So no hardship whatsoever!

My cleanse recipes are hardly recipes, so I will just list what I used, and you can make my selection and the amounts of each ingredient as elastic as you like. All of my cleanse recipes are gluten-free, and very low carbs, so enjoy them in any amounts you like. One exception: the chia date smoothie is somewhat higher carb because of the dates, but still very moderate carbs.

Green Smoothie:

Nice and spicy, and super funky, like having a real cocktail even while you are making a cleanse recipe treat:
1 jalapeno, 5-6 sprigs cilantro (or parsley or dill), 1-2 whole leaves swiss chard (or kale or spinach), 1-2 cups coconut water (or rice milk or other dairy-free milk), 1/4 cup lemon or lime juice, good piece ginger, 1/2-1 avocado. Blend everything in a blender (love my Vitamix) thoroughly until perfectly smooth. Adjust the amounts any way you like. Makes 3-4 cups.

Vegetable Soup:

I got 2 perfect gallons, some of which we ate, the rest of which I froze in quart containers.
I threw in a pot: 2 quarts water, 2 quarts tomato juice, 1 medium head diced celery root, 1 medium head diced rutabaga, 3 sliced leeks, 6 very thin sliced carrots, large wedge thinly sliced cabbage, 1/3 cup olive oil, 1 tablespoon turmeric, 3-4 bay leaves, 1 large bunch parsley minced, 1 large bunch cilantro (tough stems removed. Don’t like cilantro? just skip it) minced, sea salt (very little, as the tomato juice has plenty of salt). I love kelp powder, very inexpensive and easy to find online, I threw in 2 tablespoons. Bring everything to boil, then cook about 1 hour. adjust texture and seasonings. Don’ t have time to dice the veggies? No problem, throw everything in the pot uncut, cook for one hour then cream with an immersion blender until smooth.

Miso Soup:

I have a big chapter on miso soup with all the fixin’s, it’s all there: keep to the basic options for the purpose of our cleanse recipes (in other words, no pasta, no fish, no chicken)

Chia Date Smoothie:

Did you think I would deprive you of dessert? This is as fabulous as ice cream, and a real powerhouse.
Here is what I did: I put 3 tablespoons chia seeds in a blender with 2 cups almond milk, and just let the mixture soak for a few minutes to soften the chia seeds. Then I added: 8 pitted dates, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, 2 tablespoons peanut butter. Blend until smooth, adding a little “milk” to thin it too the right consistency. It will be a thick like a milkshake. About 3 cups.
